# Writing messages

> Format a message, keep a draft across devices, and quote the part of a reply you want to discuss.

Write a message in the shape June should read it: plain text, a list, a quote, or code. Your draft stays with the chat until you send it.

## Format as you type

With **Rich text composer** on in **Settings**, the web composer shows Markdown formatted while you type, and sends exactly the characters you typed:

- `**bold**`, `*italic*`, `~~strikethrough~~` and `` `code` `` inside a line.
- At the start of a line: `> ` makes a quote, `- `, `1. ` or `- [ ] ` a list or a task, `# ` to `###### ` a heading, and `---` a line across. Right under a line of text, `---` or `===` makes that line a heading instead, as it does in June's replies.
- ` ``` ` and **Enter** open a code block. Pick its language at its top. In a code block **Enter** starts a new line; to send, hold ⌘ (Ctrl on Windows and Linux) and press **Enter**; a closing ` ``` ` and **Enter**, or two empty lines and **Enter**, take you out of it.

In a list or a quote, **Shift + Enter** (or **Enter** on a phone's on-screen keyboard) continues it, and on an empty line ends it. **Tab** moves a list item in under the one above it, one level at a time, and **Shift + Tab** back out, taking the items after it in its list along. **Backspace** at the start of a list item, a heading or a code block turns it back into plain text. A line written right under a quote's or a list item's text is part of it, as it is in June's replies, so leaving a quote or a list with **Shift + Enter** puts a blank line before your next line. Numbered lists count 1, 2, 3 as your message will, whatever numbers you typed.

## Keep a draft across devices

Your text and finished uploads are saved as a draft shortly after you stop typing. Leave the thread, close the tab or switch between the web and mobile app: the draft stays until you send it.

Each thread has its own draft. New chats also have separate drafts for Personal, each project and, on the web, each organization.

Let uploads finish before switching devices. If a draft seems missing, check that you opened the same thread or new-chat location with the same account.

> Example prompt: Read the attached contract and list every date I have to act on

> Example prompt: Draft a short reply to this customer: we can deliver on the 14th, not the 10th

## Quote part of a reply

Point June to the exact words you want to discuss. On the web, select text in a finished reply and choose **Quote**. A quote chip appears in your composer and opens a place for an optional comment. Save the comment, add anything else to your message, and send.

_Demo: A quote keeps the selected words beside your comment._

In the mobile app, long-press a finished reply and choose the quote action. Select the words in the sheet and quote them. Quotes appear above the text box and are sent before your typed text. Tap a quote to edit its comment or remove it.

Open a quote in a sent message to read the selected text and comment. **Go to source** returns to the original reply. The quote stays readable even if the original reply is no longer available. Quotes and comments stay with your saved draft when you switch between the web and mobile app.

You can quote June's finished replies, with up to 8,000 characters in each quote and each comment.
